Muslim girls and guys tried out speed dating at matrimonial banquet

Many traditional Muslim girls and guys have contemplated dating, but would be very hesitant to begin seeing someone who was not picked out or approved by members of their family as possible long-term partners.

However, at the matrimonial banquet at the largest Muslim convention in North America, Arab men and women had the opportunity to meet and greet each other - briefly - without feeling guilty, as the event was organized and chaperoned, according to the New York Times.

The seminar not only offered sanctioned mingling events, but also fostered a dialogue about the difficulties of Muslim dating in America.

"These kids grew up in America, where the social norm is that it is okay to date, that it is okay to have sex before marriage," Imam Muhamed Magid of the Adams Center, a collective of seven mosques in Virginia, told the news source. "So the kids are caught between the ideal of their parents and the openness of the culture on this issue."

Many Arab men and women who are struggling to figure out how their values align with their parents' and their societies' may benefit from seeking out similar opportunities to discuss Muslim dating and relationships.
