Every couple has a different level of affection that they're comfortable displaying in public. Some have no qualms about making out in a park on a sunny afternoon or holding hands as they stroll down the aisle at the grocery store, while for others, a peck on the cheek is as risqué as they're willing to get.

One pair in Dubai, however, is paying the price for their public passion, and facing up to a month in jail.

A British couple was sentenced to a month in jail for inappropriate behavior and illegal drinking after an Emirati woman complained to authorities that she saw the two locking lips over dinner.

The pair, Charlotte Adams, 25, and Ayman Najafi, 24, insist they only exchanged a peck on the cheek in greeting, and they will be appealing the sentence.

The news will likely comes as a surprise to many Arab girls and guys, as Dubai is known as one of the most lenient and liberal cities in the United Arab Emirates.

Though the U.S. doesn't tend to enforce blue laws dictating proper public kissing etiquette, the controversy could serve as a reminder to Arab girls and guys that they should be mindful of their environment when swooping in for a smooch.
